Brrr!!!

Hello! So sorry for the long absence! I hope everyone is happy, warm, and in good health :)

It's a cooooooold, blustery, rainy, fall day here in Eastern Kentucky! Brrr! I stepped out to throw something to my hubby to take to the curb for the trash and quickly shut the door back! All I had on was capris and no socks, so I felt it for sure! Most definitely will be pulling out my thick fleece jacket for this weather. I normally don't like this kind of weather... but lately I've decided it's not so bad as long as I'm in the house watching it all happen from my window.. I can handle that just fine. The birds don't seem to mind and seem to be very happy that I still have the feeder plenty full for them. I had over 20 birds out there the other day enjoying the free food! I can't say that I blame them at all for it :)

Since we haven't really been up to too much lately, I'm just going to go through so quick pics I've taken over the last few days! Enjoy!

Tommy cat has really been enjoying the cool breeze coming in through the windows! He'll sit for hours as long as he's undisturbed and just watch the day go by :)

I picked these from my mom's rose bush.. they were just buds when I got them and by the next morning they looked like this! Aren't they gorgeous! And oh my did they smell SOOOO good!! I love roses :)

My lil man is finally getting to where he'll give you great hugs! I just LOVE it! He'll come up to me and give me a big hug and tell me "I miss you mommy, I wuvs you mommy!" It melts my heart!

Then the other day I actually got him to sit still for a minute so that I could grab some fall portraits of him. I'm so excited! Thanks to shutterfly.com, I'll soon have them sent to me in the mail and put up in frames around the house and passed out to friends and family!

This is the one I got for all of the portraits.. I just love this picture!

Ah he just melts my heart! I love him so much!

Good weekend!

Good day everyone! I hope everyone is having a lovely day and if you're lucky like we've been, enjoying some really great weather! I've had the windows open since Friday and it's SO nice! I absolutely cannot wait another few weeks when I'll be able to keep them up for good for a couple of months until it gets too cold. That is my favorite time of Spring and Fall, when I can open the windows and let in some fresh air, it makes the house smell so nice!

We had a really good weekend. Saturday, hubby's mamaw's family threw a family reunion that lil man
and I went to. Didn't know many of the people there, but lil man did get to spend time with his favorite cousin C! They play SO good together! The only way we could get them to agree to leave so we could all go home, was to promise them that we would come out to C's house later that day.

No sooner than lil man got up from his nap, he was asking about him and asking if we were going to go play with C. So out there we went and the boys just had a blast! Lil man did NOT want to leave when it was time to go, but my goodness it was after 11 p.m. at this point and I was shocked he was even still going! It was good to go out and spend time with the family though. Hubby's aunt D is one of my favorite people ever.. we can talk about anything and everything and it just feels nice to have someone to relate to about stuff. Plus I love seeing lil C! Other than my lil man, he's got a huge part of my heart to his name!
Can't believe this lil guy is already about to turn 5 and is Kindergarten!

After all that fun, I've been crocheting up a storm this weekend! Of course now my hand is protesting any sort of crafting, so I haven't even touched any yarn this morning! I think I'm going through withdrawls! I really want to get back to work on my scarf (progress pic in just a minute!)

Projects include another tree skirt, this one done for my parents:

The lion hat for my uncle:

And a hat order from one of my friends:

That last hat has become a popular order! I love it though!

Then finally, the last time I got to work on this was Friday night.. going to try and pick it back up today because it's screaming for me to work on it:

So as you can see, I've had a pretty productive weekend! Very proud of myself for getting 3 crochet projects done! Still have 2 more tree skirts to get started, one for us and one for my grandparents. That one is going to be sort of a surprise gift. My grandpa asked how much for one to be made, told him, then decided it's going to be a gift! I bet they'll be so excited!
Anyways.. gotta hop off of here, got to go to work in a bit! Hope everyone has a great day!!

Shells and Cables Hat Pattern

Well I FINALLY got this wrote out! I started it when I was making the last hat and lost the draft. So as I was making another of these hats last night, I wrote it up as I went! Oddly enough, all 4 hats that I've made with this pattern, the recipient wanted sparkly yarn. I've had one blue, 2 green, and now a black!

So here you go! I really hope you enjoy this hat as much as I do! Can't say that I have one for myself, I don't look good in hats, but I do enjoy the look of it.

Materials:
-Any worsted weight yarn, I used the "I love this yarn" from Hobby Lobby and it works great!
-H hook
-Yarn needle

Fpdc - Front post double crochet
This is to fit teenager through adult. The pattern could definitely be altered to fit smaller I'm sure!

Hello everyone!! Happy weekend to you! Can't say too much has gone on around here the last few days... lots of staying home or going to work and a bit of crocheting and knitting in between.

Last weekend we took a trip out to the county soccer fields and watched my brother shoot off a rocket. I think lil man was more excited to be in a big field with tons of running room! He ran and ran and ran! See that little bitty speck way out there, yeap, that's little man! He had so much fun!

The first go around, my brother had to go WAY out in neck high grass just to find the rocket, the wind carried it away! The second shoot ended up with the wind catching it while it was falling and sticking it right in the top of a VERY tall tree. Needless to say, the rocket that has sat in his room for years is no longer in his possession. Kind of sucks if you think about it. Lil man was all excited about it! He'd been playing with it at the house and saying that it was going to space and going to visit Mars, something he got off watching Mickey Mouse. He asked on the way home where the rocket was since it wasn't coming back with us, so we told him it went to the moon :), seemed to satisfy him good enough.

Having fun on daddy's shoulders! :)

As for knitting, I feel like I've learned quiet a bit the last few days! It's like crochet really, once you learn the basic stitches, it's not all that hard. Sure, there are PLENTY of things that have me on the edge of my seat when I'm trying to figure them out, but once I get them, I have them.

After the green striped hat that didn't turn out so well, I found this hat and knew right away that I HAD to make it for my son! He absolutely loves anything Mario (as if you can't tell from the pj's!) and I'm happy to say that this hat fits him perfectly! It's got plenty of stretch and plenty of room to grow! So assuming we don't lose it or something unfortunate doesn't happen to it, I can see it being worn for a few years yet!

Next I looked around for an owl pattern and made this little swatch that I am so proud of! I want to make myself something with some owls on it, but haven't decided what yet.. hmmm. By the way, I didn't wear my owl pj's on purpose while making this, but it made a nice little background for it I thought :)

Wednesday we took a trip to Hobby Lobby, out of the blue really. I got off work 2 hrs. earlier than normal, did a little mental jig, then took off to Richmond! I lucked out completely! I had found a pattern for a scarf that I really liked and knew I wanted to get a nice yarn for it.. was actually considering getting the "Bamboo Ewe" brand anyways! And just my luck, I get there and they have a few skeins of it on clearance! 2nd mental jig of the night happened then! They also had "Fisherman's Wool" on clearance as well, so I grabbed a skein of it for hubby's hat. I think I'm going to do a staghorn cable and ribbing on it. I also picked up a pack of cable needles, the one with the dip in it being what I really wanted, but they only had this pack of three. I don't like the hook looking ones, I drop my stitches all of the time with them. And the brown yarn hasn't got a purpose yet.. I just liked that color that particular night I guess, hehe!

And now, I'm sitting here working on this! The cabled scarf the Bamboo Ewe is intended for. Pattern can be found here! It's super soft and I think it's going to be really warm since the cables make it a bit thicker! This is the 1st 16 rows of the pattern and it's just repeats from here. I'm currently on row 8 of the repeats and it's going much quicker this time, hoping it continues on that pattern because I'm a bit slow as far as knitting is concerned lol

I'm sorry if this post was a bit boring.. reading through it, it does sound so. But we really haven't done much around here this week.. it's been boring. But alas, that's all the time I have for writing. Lil man is requiring some mommy attention, and I do need to fix him some lunch, I'm thinking pizza rolls, and I really need to get back to cleaning the house. Knitting is taking up all of my attention, but I also need to get to work on the 4 Marios.. or at least try to.. I think it's going to require lots of tylenol before I can start on them since crocheting is hurting my hand something awful the last few days :(

I hope everyone has a great weekend! I'll write again soon when something new happens! Oh and hopefully I will have a new pattern post soon too!

Success and Fail

Since my last post I have:

Successfully learned how to knit a heart chart :D I'd say pretty good for my first go around!

But failed at making a great hat.. darn. It turned out too short and too wide. Live and learn though.. I now what NOT to do next time :)

Hope everyone is having a great day! It's the weekend! Yay!

Knit.. purl.. knit.. purl..

It has to be said.. *gasp!* I think I like knitting better than crochet on certain levels! Such as.. I like knitting for clothes, hats, socks.. well okay, anything wearable! As you can see, I have been busy. I don't knit fast, but it's getting there. So I completed the back of the sweater in a record of 5 days! Woo hoo!! I keep unfolding it to pet it and daydream longingly about my lil man wearing it! He's going to look pretty darn handsome if I do say so myself!

Now.. I did have a few problems with this things, as only a beginner would I suppose. I had to figure out how to do the ribbing (thank you YouTube!), that was fun.. I've now done it to a hat \/ down there \/ and I'm super excited that it's now easy after watching that video and seeing how the lady is holding everything. I haven't got anyone in real life to teach me.. so I have to go somewhere and YouTube is definitely the next best thing because the people break it down really easy for you. My book I got came with a DVD and the girl on there works so fast that she completely lost me, and it only shows you how to do the knit and purl stitch. Kinda need to know how to do more than that, ya know?

Now, I'm sure if an experienced knitter looked at the back of this sweater, they'd automatically find where I messed up. I know where it is, so I can spot it right off the bat. See up there, at the top of it about the 3rd row into the dark green... yeahhhhhhhh.. I TOTALLY messed it up! Now, at the time, I had NO CLUE on how I did this.. could not begin to understand WHY I started a row and then turned the thing around and went back to the beginning... WTF was I thinking?? was going through my head! I didn't notice I had done this until I had done 2 whole rows ON TOP of the messed up spot. Once I noticed it, my brain went into complete panic mode! Pretty much told my son "don't talk, don't touch me, don't even breath!!" because I had to take out the stitches, slowly but surely, and put them back on my needle, then take out the next row, slowly but surely, then part of the NEXT row, soooooo slowly but surely! And I should mention, I do NOT know how to do this.. sooo.. that's probably why you can see the messed up spot.. I don't think I had the loops turned right or something.. no clue. It was a tense 20 minutes or so of me doing this. I knew I wasn't doing it right.. but hoped and prayed that it would look, ya know, alright once I got it all done. I think it does.. I hope it does anyways.

On the way to work, my subconscious must have been on because I realized just how I did this. I had gotten up to get my son something to eat and drink. Instead of finishing the row, I just left it laying there. Whenever I got back, I picked it up, wondered why my yarn was on the back of the needles (I was on a purl row), and just simply continued knitting the row.. didn't think a thing of it. It's lucky, I guess, that whenever I do a few rows, I always stretch it out to see how it looks. Of course, I didn't do that for another 2 rows, apparently, but when I seen that, I literally about cried!

Then.. the other hard part.. oh I wish I had taken a picture of this one.. you guys probably would have laughed! The pattern reads as this:

Bind off 15 (17, 19) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Bind off
remaining 28 sts for Back Neck.

I had to read it many many many times, to kind of understand what it was saying. I had to read the directions for the front to get some idea. The front tells me to have 15 stitches left on each shoulder. The back, to me, says NOTHING about that! Sooo.. what did I do.. I did 15 stitches, bound off the 29 (I have an extra stitch.. have since the beginning and didn't feel like ripping it all out, so I had to make it work) and then knit 15 for the other shoulder. Turned the work, went to YouTube to figure out how to bind off in purl (never again!!!) and bound off one shoulder. THEN.. I had 15 stitches left on the other shoulder and NO CLUE how to get to them. Soooo.. in my newby knitterness, I tied off the shoulder I was working on, then went to the other shoulder and added a new strand of yarn so that I could bind off the other shoulder. I'm sure I did that all kinds of wrong.. but I did it.. it's done. That is all that matters!

My other project I've been working on, is a hat to go with this sweater. Due to some advice I had on one of my comments, I went in search of a 40-60 in. cord to go with my interchangable needles I bought. Hobby Lobby doesn't carry anything longer than 29 in. which is what I already had. So.. searched around the net for more suggestions as to what length of cord would work the best for the size I'm trying to make. Came up with a 12 in. cord and it is working perfect! Or well, perfect for a toddler-adult head anyways. Anything smaller than a toddler hat, I don't think it would work at all. So I am definitely planning on buying a set from Knit Picks.. it seems that they have the best as far as flexibility goes, which is what I'm needing. I have SOOOO much baby yarn lying around, so I'm planning on making a ton of little hats from it and donating them to the hospital that my son was born in. I just hope I can get the needles and cords soon.. I have a birthday coming up next month, so maybe it can be my gift to myself :)

Now, to all my knitting followers, what do you like best as far as needles, wood, nickel plated, zephyr acrylic? I'm thinking I've been using the nickel plated, but I really have no idea.. they're Yarnology brand.. so whatever those are? The site has a package where you can buy all three at once, but since money is a little tight, I have to go easy on what I get and when I get it. So give me some suggestions :)

Anyways.. this post has become a bit longer than I had planned.. my lil man has woke up, my hubby's papaw came over to say hey for a minute and pick hubby up for a day of work at their house, and I'm passed due for some coffee! So I hope everyone has a great day!

July Projects

I had a very busy July I think! I meant to write up this post the other day, and never got the chance to get back on here to do so. So a week later, here is the promised post of all the crochet goodies going on at The Ridge!

Got more work done on our bedroom blanket! Since these photos were taken, 20 more squares have been added to it! It's already so snugly and very warm! Too warm for right now in 100 degree weather, but it will be perfect for this fall and winter! I just hope I get it done before then!

I took a minute to put a border around a blanket I received as a gift from the marching band (8 years ago!) I was in, in high school! I've always loved this blanket since it's soooo cuddly and warm and very soft. But it did lack prettiness as far as looks go. Luckily it already had a blanket stitch around it to begin with, so all I had to do was add the border. I'm very happy with how it turned out!

I finally gave my cushion a back and I LOVE it!! This cushion is so bright and colorful. Unfortunately, not everyone in the house agrees with it's loveliness, hubby isn't a bit fond of it. Lil man and myself quiet enjoy it though!

I finished a pom pom hat for an order, and of course lil man had to try it on! If you're interested in the pattern, it's my own "Pom Pom Hat" that I have posted on my blog :) it works up very quickly!

This little guy goes to the same kiddo that the hat goes too! I really hope he enjoys him as much as my son does! Lil man LOVES green, so you can imagine!

Then I have these too hats to finish.. should have them done within the week if I can find the time to get to them. All I need on the green is a green and white flower. The lion hat just needs its mane (which it has more now than it does here). These go to my aunt and uncle, I really hope they like them! I will be writing up the pattern for the green hat if anyone is interested. I should have it posted in a week or so!

And then as far as my knitting goes, I have FINALLY figured out how to 'knit 2, purl 2' and I am SOOOOO sooooo happy!! I'm not sure what exactly was my problem with figuring this out, but I've pinned it down to one main thing. The way I was doing my knitting just wasn't working out. I was knitting holding the yarn in my left hand, then when I needed to purl, I was switching it to my right. So, I went on to try and learn how to purl holding in my left.. definite no go there! I can knit very fast holding the yarn in my left hand, so I really didn't want to switch, but in the end I did and I think it has definitely helped me out!

So this is the back of lil man's sweater!! I had to frog the other one because after getting a good few inches in, I decided to measure his chest. Why I didn't do that before I started, I don't know. It was a sad night On The Ridge! The back of the sweater was measuring 14 inches across.. lil man's chest circumference is only 20 inches. Ah.. I was a very sad about this! So I've changed yarns, and I changed the bottom of the sweater because I wasn't liking the way the stockinette stitch was curling. I know that's what it's supposed to do and that's what the pattern calls for, but it would really bug me and I'd be constantly pulling it down on him!

All in all, I think I was very busy in July! Let's hope August is just as productive!

Oh! I almost forgot, I made that bunting I was talking about in my last post! It's very pretty :) Hubby said it looked like we were having a birthday party, but I don't care a bit, I like it!

Adventures in knitting!

It's been a little over a month now since I first picked up some knitting needles.. there have been tears, tantrums, and many moments where I've just wanted to throw all my needles, book, and DVD in the trash!

This is one of the very first attempts at the garter stitch.. this little swatch took me a good hour or so.. I'm so slow!

A month later and practice with the garter and purl stitches are getting better! I'm still slower than Christmas, but it's starting to look much better! I'm finally happy with it and starting to feel comfortable with these stitches.

Gave knitting in the round with 5 needles a good honest try last night. Now, this is NOT even close to my first attempt at this! I tried about 2-3 weeks ago after watching a youtube video and it was horrible!! It was so bad that I didn't even want to try for a while! I've also tried on the circular needle I bought a week or so ago.. now that is HARD!! I have no idea why it's so hard, but it is! Maybe it's because I'm trying to make hats? Maybe hats don't work on that type of needle? I really don't know.. I just know it's a big jumbled up mess.. not even worth taking pics of it.. it's bad!

So last night after trying to knit in the round, and messing it up (what else is new) I said screw the hats, and decided to go on and start making lil man's sweater! And thankfully, it's done on straight needles and not on circular ones like I was afraid it would. I can do straight knitting.. that's getting easy finally! And I also have to thank my grandma next time I see her, because I didn't have the size needles this pattern calls for.. or I didn't think I did anyways. She gave me a big bunch of needles a while back and there just happened to be a set of size 7 needles in there! Yay!

I hope this sweater works out.. I only have 3 skiens of the variated yarn, two of which match and one that doesn't. Sooooo.. it might not look 'uniform' and right, but it's going to be made one way or another!!

Happy Rainy Day

Good Saturday morning!! Glad to see you here :) I hope everyone's day is going as well as my own. Today is one of those days that just makes me so happy to be a mommy! We've had a pretty good day, myself and lil man! I gotta say, there are some Saturdays where he does drive me a bit bonkers, he has a tendency to be quiet loud!! I am a very quiet person.. I enjoy very quiet things (crocheting, reading, listening to quiet music.. yeah those sorts of things!) So when he's loud, I feel very frazzled! Today though (and I could just be losing my mind) and for the last week or so, he seems to be calming a bit.. so glad if this is the case!

We've had a good morning. He's gone between watching movies in mommy and daddy's room, to coming back to the living room to cuddle on my lap while I crochet or browse online. One of the little cuddle sessions consisted of reading "Robin Hood," one of his favorites! This little book came from daddy, one he had as a kid and loved as well. My hubby has been helping his papaw at their house, trying to clean up the basement that had a bit of flooding and ruined pretty much everything! As far as I know, this box of books was salvageable, and I am SO glad! I'm a huge book fan and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that my kiddo is very much into books! I enjoy reading to him, I enjoy the quiet cuddle time it brings with it! Now I really need to invest in a book shelf for him because he is getting a really good collection going!

After reading the book, he went back to whatever he was doing before.. either playing with trains, or watching Thomas the train (he's a big train fan!) and I went back to reading through some blogs. I've decided to make some bunting and I am SO excited about it! I have a good amount of card stock paper hanging around not being used, so I'm going to use it! I think I'm going to put it in my kitchen.. maybe.. or the bedroom. I really don't know. I just know I'm going to make it!

He's starting to get a really good, high jump going!

While browsing online, I noticed some clouds rolling in... getting darker and darker outside. I didn't even know it was supposed to rain, but it was very much appreciated what little we did get! Since it wasn't a bit cold out and wasn't thundering any, I took lil man out to splash in puddles and play in the rain. Oh did he LOVE that!! He splashed, he ran, he jumped and he skipped! He played with sticks and leaves and marveled at the fact that mommy was allowing him outside while it was raining! He kept saying "mommy, it's rainin', I all wet!" and asking me what was happening and what was falling (many times!) I love this age! He is FULL of questions and I love being able to give him the answers he's looking for! I think we were out there for a good 30 minutes or more! Plenty of time for him to get soaked, and for bigger thundering clouds to roll in! So in we went, into the deepest tub full of warm water he's ever had (he said it was a "simmin' poo" lol.)

Here, he told me he was "hopping" but I think it looks like more of a skip :)

Soon, rain boots were traded for bare feet, and even more skipping, hopping, and jumping fun! And I might just be a biased mommy, but I do think he has the cutest little feet ever!

Now we're sitting here, just finishing up lunch and watching, instead of reading, Robin Hood. Like I said, it's a favorite! But I see a pair of sleepy eyes and it's time for lil man to go down for his afternoon nap, and time for mommy to get herself a shower and get to working on the bunting I have planned out in my head!!

While typing this, this showed up! I went to the kitchen to start up the bigger computer and seen this out the door! Doesn't that just look a bit ominous? Sunny with REALLY dark storm clouds in the back rolling in! And oh did it roll in alright! It poured!

P.S. Got a bit of crochet goodies to show you all here in a bit.. it's all on my other computer, so it'll have to wait til later, probably tomorrow afternoon when lil man takes his nap :)
